Seasons of a Woman's Life

Perimenopause

The threshold years: the autumn of life, the doorway to sovereignty.

The body

What science and medicine say

What it is

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, usually 4 to 10 years, often beginning in the 40s and for some women in the late 30s.

Hormones fluctuate rather than simply fall. Progesterone tends to drop first, as ovulation becomes less regular; then oestrogen swings, sometimes higher than before, sometimes lower. These swings are why this season can feel so changeable.

Your own experience

Every woman's threshold is her own. Rather than handing you a list of what might happen, Sacred She invites you to listen, and to write, in your own words, what you notice. Your cycle may change its rhythm; you can follow your bleed or the moon.

Support

Movement and strength training, good sleep habits, less alcohol, and nourishing food can make a real difference. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a valid, effective medical option for many women, something to discuss openly with your doctor, never to be ashamed of.

The soul

The spiritual and traditional view

The second Saturn return

Astrologers speak of a second Saturn return around 58, but the threshold often begins in the 40s, when life asks: what is truly mine? The old masks begin to slip.

The threshold into sovereignty

If your whole life is a year, perimenopause is its autumn: the harvest, the falling leaves, the turning inward. The fire of these years is not madness: it is power returning, asking you to stop shrinking.

This is the time to grieve what is ending and to claim who you are becoming: a woman who belongs to herself.

See a doctor if you have

  • Bleeding that is much heavier than is usual for you (for example soaking a pad or tampon every hour)
  • Bleeding after sex or between periods
  • Any bleeding after menopause (12 months without a period)
  • Anything in this season that affects your life, work or relationships, or simply concerns you

HRT is a valid medical option to discuss with your doctor. Choosing it, or not, is your sovereign choice.

Sacred She offers spiritual and wellness practices, not medical advice or treatment.
