Seasons of a Woman's Life

Menopause & Beyond

The Crone, the Wise Woman, the Queen: the wise blood held within.

The body

What science and medicine say

What it is

Menopause is the moment you have gone 12 months without a period. On average this happens around 51. After that, you are postmenopausal for the rest of your life.

Menopause before 45 is called early menopause, and before 40 premature menopause (premature ovarian insufficiency). Both need medical follow-up, because of their effect on bones and heart.

Caring for your body

  • Bones: lower oestrogen means faster bone loss. Strength training, vitamin D, calcium from food and protein protect them.
  • Heart: heart-disease risk rises after menopause. Move daily, know your blood pressure and cholesterol, and don't smoke.
  • Pelvic floor: gentle pelvic floor exercises keep your foundation strong. Your doctor can tell you about every option for intimate care whenever you wish.

The soul

The spiritual and traditional view

The Wise Woman

In many traditions, a woman who no longer bleeds becomes the Crone: the Wise Woman, the elder, the Queen. Not an ending, but a crowning.

The old teachings say that she now keeps her 'wise blood' within: the power that once flowed out each month now stays with her, ripening into wisdom.

Freedom from the cycle

Free from the monthly tide, you can follow the moon instead: rest at the new moon, shine at the full. Your energy is yours.

The world needs elders. Your stories, your boundaries and your laughter are medicine for the women who come after you.

See a doctor if

  • You have any bleeding after menopause: always get it checked.
  • Your periods stopped before 45, and especially before 40.
  • Anything in this season affects your quality of life or concerns you.

HRT and local oestrogen are valid medical options to discuss with your doctor.
